The Fly Shop at Redding California
Founders Mike Michalak and his partner Brad Jackson opened The Fly Shop in 1978. After their modest start Brad left the business in 1987 to move into the world of stocks and bonds. With a little help from the bank and a lot of hard work, The Fly Shop is proudly celebrating its 26th year in business.
Over time, The Fly Shop has fortunately attracted the employment of some of the best talent in the West. Much of our success is due to these honest and loyalemployees. Since the second year of the company's existence, Mike Mercer has been the owner's right hand man. Pat Pendergast, who has worked for The Fly Shop for more than 8 years, manages our travel department. Tim Fox oversees our inventory while Rachel Connery supervises the Mel Krieger International School of Fly Fishing. We also have Duane Milleman who coordinates over 2,000 days of guided fishing each year. Our retail staff includes professional people who have chosen The Fly Shop as an opportunity to display their talents and to advance their personal success. It has been these kind of people working for the shop that have helped to build our reputation. A host of well-known fly fishermen like, Brian O'Keefe, John Dietz and Andy Burk, have cashed paychecks from The Fly Shop.
This past September, The Fly Shop was given the most prestigious award that can be presented to any fly fishing shop in America. What makes the honor so important to us is that it isn't a popularity contest, and it isn't given by a committee. The "top shop" is picked by the entire industry. Sort of like the Academy Awards. The Fly Fishing Retailer of the Year was chosen by our peers.
This was only the second time the award has ever been bestowed. The presentation was made by the folks from American Angler magazine at the American Fly Fishing Tackle Association exposition in Denver and accepted by Tim Fox, our retail manager. We're grateful, and very proud. But not humble.
It was only coincidental that this happened while The Fly Shop was celebrating our 25th anniversary, and timing of the award made that milestone even more significant. At the same time it validates The Fly Shop philosophy: "Surround ourselves with a talented staff, good ideas and products, and good things will continue to happen."

Kaufmanns' Streamborn Fly Shops
